MAYOR NEWSOM MEETS WITH WHITE HOUSE CABINET SECRETARIES AND OFFICIALS ABOUT FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDING AND HEALTH CARE
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Mayor Gavin Newsom met with several White House Cabinet secretaries and officials today to secure federal stimulus funds for San Francisco projects and initiatives.
In the morning, he met with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson. They discussed the need for continued support of the Hunters Point Shipyard and Treasure Island. They also discussed San Francisco’s environmental initiatives, including the City’s leading recycling program at Pier 96 and the City’s green job training programs, CityBuild and GoSolar SF.
Mayor Newsom also met with White House Urban Affairs Director, Adolfo Carrion. They discussed HOPE SF, Treasure Island, and the Hunters Point Shipyard, but spent the majority of their time discussing Healthy San Francisco, the City’s universal health care program.
Later in the day, Newsom gave a speech about President Obama's health care plan to members of Health Care for America Now, in which he noted that San Francisco must be part of the national conversation on health care because of the success of Healthy San Francisco.
After the speech, he is slated to meet with the White House Director of Health Care Reform, Nancy Deparle and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
