Neighborhood Marketplace Initiative

The Neighborhood Marketplace Initiative (NMI) is designed to help promote and revitalize neighborhood commercial districts in San Francisco’s developing neighborhoods through a public/private partnership between the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).

OEWD helps targeted neighborhoods develop a comprehensive revitalization strategy. NMI sites then receive grant funding for staffing that enables them to:

• Provide support for the attraction and retention of locally-owned enterprises
• Increase districts’ potential for providing jobs, services and opportunities for residents
• Attract public and private investment to improve the appearance of commercial corridors
• Address quality of life issues such as neighborhood crime, safety and cleanliness
• Build collaborations between merchants, property owners, residents and community groups

Targeted neighborhoods include Visitacion Valley, Portola, Ocean Avenue, Polk Street, Excelsior, Tenderloin, Bayview, and Divisadero.
