Transbay
OVERVIEW
The Joint Development Division serves as the City’s main liaison to the Transbay Joint Powers Authority—the entity charged with building the Transbay Transit Center, which is being billed as the “Grand Central Station” of the West Coast. The Transbay Project’s primary goals are to design, build, operate and maintain a new transportation hub at the current site of the Transbay Terminal. The proposed hub will connect regional bus lines, MUNI, BART, Caltrain and eventually, High Speed Rail; in addition, the Caltrain commuter route will be extended 1.3 miles into the new downtown Transit Center. The Transbay Project will also serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the surrounding area by providing parks, 2,400 new housing units (35% at below market rates) and 1.2 million square feet of office, hotel and other commercial space in the surrounding area.
PROJECT UPDATE
The first phase of the Transbay Transit Center Project commenced in December 2008 with the groundbreaking of the Temporary Terminal. Construction of the new Transit Center is scheduled to begin in spring 2010 and be completed in 2015. The Caltrain Downtown Rail Extension is estimated to begin in 2012 and be completed in 2016.
