Presidio
OVERVIEW
The Joint Development Division also serves as the City's liaison to the Presidio Trust, the federal agency that manages the Presidio of San Francisco. Once the Army's premiere West Coast military post, the Presidio is a National Historic Landmark district and a unique national park site. People live and work in the park, helping to maintain nearly 6 million square feet of building space and the Presidio’s historic character. In 1996, Congress devised an innovative management and funding model to preserve the Presidio's natural, scenic, cultural and recreational resources, and ultimately to make it financially self-sufficient. An early and ongoing success is the redevelopment of the 23-acre Letterman Hospital site by George Lucas, which reopened in 2005 as the state-of-the-art Letterman Digital Arts Center. In addition to the already impressive array of restaurants, recreational and conservation activities, future park amenities are expected to include at least one hotel and a number of cultural institutions.
PROJECT UPDATE
OEWD continues to work closely with interested neighbors, citizens and various stakeholder groups on development projects within the Presidio, including the redevelopment of the Public Health Service Hospital site on the Presidio's southern edge, as well as the proposed new cultural institutions at the Main Parade. Looking ahead, we expect the non-historic wings of the Public Health Service Hospital to begin demolition in 2008, with the new public amenities, including the housing project, to open in 2011-2012. As for the Main Parade, the Trust will conclude its selection process for a cultural institution in early 2008, and the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) should be available for review and comment by summer 2008. The City will continue to take an active role in evaluating the development impacts on the Presidio’s neighboring communities.
