Neighborhood Marketplace Initiative

CHINATOWN

In recogition of Chinatown's importance to San Francisco both as a cultural gem and a major destination for visitors, the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development has engaged members of the local community, neighborhood businesses, local non-profit organizations, and tourism and planning professionals in a collaborative effort to increase economic activity in Chinatown and to support it as an attractive and cultural destination for locals and visitors alike. The purpose of this action plan is to identify short- and long-term efforts that the City and sponsoring agents will undertake to improve business conditions in Chinatown.

Based on the cumulative research of the economic situation of Chinatown and the results of the survey, interviews, and forum, the Mayor's Team has identified a plan to help boost Chinatown's economy, as well as to strengthen its connection to that of the larger city. The focus of this plan is five-fold:

  • Business retention and attraction: 1. to enhance existing businesses and increase customer base
  • Marketing and customer attraction: 2. publicize and enhance existing events and cultural and commercial activity
  • Cleanliness and safety: 3. to encourage a larger customer base to come and to linger in Chinatown
  • Physical conditions: 4. to enhance the physical appearance of the neighborhood and maximize use of alleyways
  • Parking and traffic: 5. to increase access for more visitors and shoppers from the larger Bay Area
