Energy Efficiency Programs: Sustainable Success in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO ENERGY WATCH PROGRAM

San Francisco’s Department of the Environment energy-saving program provides support services to small and medium businesses. Businesses can sign up now to receive expert energy assessments, financial assistance, and installation of energy saving lighting upgrades, fan-motor replacements and refrigeration controls tune-ups. Some services are available at no cost. For a small investment, businesses can take advantage of comprehensive packages that will pay back quickly with lower utility bills.

THE SOLAR PROGRAM

San Francisco’s Department of the Environment provides free technical assistance to help business owners determine if solar power makes sense for their properties. The Department of the Environment is available to help price solar systems, evaluate installers’ bids, and give advice on financial assistance, rebates, and available tax incentives.

SCHEDULE D: PG&E ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT RATE INCENTIVE PROGRAM

Aimed at large, electricity-intensive businesses sensitive to the cost of electricity, PG&E’s Schedule D Program offers an electric rate incentive to qualified businesses that locate or keep their operations in San Francisco. Schedule D provides a five year-declining discount to a qualified customer’s otherwise applicable tariff. New commercial or industrial customers with maximum billing demands greater than 200 kw, existing customers who add at least 200 kw of maximum demand, or existing customers with at least 200 kw of maximum demand may qualify.

  SAN FRANCISCO'S ENVIORNMENTAL PLAN  
  In January 2008, Mayor Gavin Newsom released SForward, the roadmap to achieve San Francisco’s ambitious environmental goals of a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions below 1990 levels by 2010 and carbon neutrality for city government by 2020. 

SForward identifies six policy areas that will be developed:
- renewable & efficient           energy
- clean transportation
- green buildings
- urban forest
- zero waste
- environmental justice

The plan also highlights programs that are working right now - such as SF's recycling efforts. biodiesel conversion efforts of food waste, as well as new ideas  such as new solar incentives and local carbon offset program
